New York State Learning Standards for the Visual Arts:
Standard 1: Creating, Performing and Participating in the Arts - Students will actively engage in the processes that constitute creation and performance in the visual arts and participate in various roles in the arts (brainstorming, sketches, and final product).
Standard 2: Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources -Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts.
Standard 3: Responding To and Analyzing Works of Art- Students will reflect on, interpret, and evaluate works of art using the language of art criticism.
Standard 4: Understanding the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts- Students will gain an understanding of how Art has been used for centuries to depict and record as a supplement or alternative to written or spoken word.

CCLS- ELA Comprehension and Collaboration 1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade level topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. Students will explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.
Reading: Building a Staircase of Complexity- Students will be working with advanced art history texts.
Writing: Students will construct a concise written analysis about a work of art. They will present significant findings to the class.
Vocabulary: Age-appropriate Tier II vocabulary words will be used and integrated in the classroom teaching.

Shift 2- Building Knowledge in the Discipline 6-12: Students will be referring to age-appropriate as well as higher level non-fiction texts throughout the year.
Shift 6- Academic Vocabulary: Students have academic vocabulary listed that will be discussed and explained to the group at the beginning of the lesson. Comprehension will be stressed throughout assignments. Additional vocabulary words will be addressed as they come up in the text or at teacher’s discretion.
